Did you know most majors can lead to multiple careers?

Students often think that when choosing a major they need to know exactly what they will do when they graduate. This can be incredibly stressful, especially when classes (or life) do not go according to plan.

According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) Job Outlook survey, hiring managers tell us that the top skills they are looking for are:

  • leadership,
  • problem-solving,
  • effective communication (both verbally and in writing),
  • willingness to take initiative, and
  • teamwork.

These are exactly the skills you’re learning through your coursework here at the UO regardless of the major you choose.

Here are some things to think about when trying to choose a major:

  • What courses have you most enjoyed taking while at UO?
  • What are some of your interests?
  • If you could major in any subject, regardless of what careers you think it will lead to, what would it be?

Visit with a Discovery Center advisor and start to see how you can take courses you are actually interested in and still stay on track in school. We are trained in academic and career advising to help you understand how you already are developing the skills that employers are actually seeking.
